Teeth Whitening Options From a Family Dentist
If you are considering getting teeth whitening, your family dentist can help. Teeth whitening can help restore teeth that have been discolored. Getting professional whitening is a popular dentist procedure. This procedure uses higher-intensity bleaching agents than home products do. This gives you immediate results.
Teeth-whitening procedure
Depending on the system that the patient has chosen, the procedure may vary slightly. However, a standard procedure is generally followed. The patient will not experience discomfort or pain. In fact, many patients will watch TV or a DVD or doze during the procedure.
First, the dentist will place a cheek retractor in the patient’s mouth. This will expose the teeth that show when the patient smiles. Then the family dentist will place a hardening resin or a liquid rubber dam on the gums. This will prevent the gums from becoming irritated from the bleaching gel.
Next, the family dentist can place the bleaching agent itself on the teeth. This substance usually contains hydrogen peroxide. It will stay on the visible portion of the teeth for about 15 minutes to half an hour. Next, the dentist can rinse or suction off the agent. That way, the dentist can apply a fresh layer of gel for another 15 minutes to half an hour.
Some types of teeth-whitening options also use an intense light that focuses on the teeth. It can either activate the gel or enhance the process. There are many opinions about whether or not the light actually helps. A family dentist can help the patient determine if a bleaching light is the right option.
After the whitening procedure
The gel will remain in place until the teeth have reached the desired shade. There is also a limit to the length of treatment times. Once the limit has been reached, the gel can be removed. The dentist will remove the cheek retractors. This will allow the patient to rinse out the mouth after treatment.
The family dentist will measure how much the teeth have whitened by. This may be by two to eight shades out of 16. The teeth may have been dehydrated during the process. This can make them appear whiter than they actually are. The true color will be visible after several days.
Patients have options after the procedure for getting the right level of whiteness. Patients can get follow-up whitening procedures. The dentist may also send the patient home with in-home bleaching trays. These can be used to maintain or touch up the results.
