Why It Is Important to Wear Retainers After Invisible Braces Treatment

After having your invisible braces off, you will still need to wear a retainer. Your body and your teeth change for the rest of your life. That is why you should wear your retainer as your dentist recommends. You do not want your teeth to shift back to the original positions. This can affect your smile’s appearance and your oral health. Keep reading to learn more about the importance of your retainer, as well as a few tips for it.

Importance of the retainer

When the braces have been removed, the patient may be reluctant for another oral appliance. However, this is an important step after having treatment. The teeth can gradually move back to the original positions. This might not be noticeable right away, but it is more obvious over time.

If the retainer feels uncomfortable or tight, the teeth have started to shift. This can happen in just a few days. As long as the patient continues to wear the retainers, the appliance will still fit. The teeth can shift a little right after the braces are removed. Wearing the retainer for a bit longer will allow the teeth to move back to where they should be.

This happens because of wear and tear on the patient’s teeth. Speaking, chewing, swallowing and biting down can all cause this to happen. However, the retainer will prevent any noticeable changes. That way, the patient can maintain a more beautiful smile.

Twelve months after braces

The teeth are held in place by the nearby jawbone. During the invisible braces treatment, that part of the jawbone softened. This process is known as resorption. That way, the teeth could move to the new position. However, it can take about nine to 12 months before the body deposits new bone in the area. The teeth will not be stabilized before this time.

After about 12 months, the patient will have enough bone around the teeth so the teeth will be stable. Retainers should still be worn. However, the retainers will not need to be worn quite as much. The dentist may recommend wearing them about three to five times each week.

The teeth will no longer move as much once the jawbone has new bone tissue. However, the teeth can move onward and forward with age. This is not an overnight change. Instead, it happens over many decades.

Even after getting invisible braces, patients will still need a retainer. The teeth move differently with the aligners, but there is still the same result. After teeth straightening, the patient will need to have retainers. Shifting can still happen otherwise.
